Wrestling team kicks off season with a big win


The Wirt County High Wrestling Team takes home the 1st place trophy in their first tournament of the season.

The wrestling team made an impact at the Ritchie County Duals by getting 1st place as a team. The seniors are Tyler Brannon, Lee Sims, Matt Toney, and Lucas Young. The newcomers are Wyatt Powell, Glen Mcfee, Ian Smith, and Lee Sims. The captains are Aaron Life, Matt Toney, and Michael Burns. The team is stronger than ever with all of the weight classes filled:

The Wirt High Wrestling Team has started off the season with a victory. At the Ritchie County Duals, WCHS had to face off against 12 teams. They wrestled each time, and the points from each match added up to their total amount of points. Our boys had the highest amount of points at the end of the tournament, allowing them to take home the trophy. Junior, Aaron Life received the most outstanding wrestling award in the honor of Andrew Davis.

Aaron Life got the most outstanding wrestler award with a 10-0 match record.


Michael Burns, one of the captains, said, “We are going to take a lot of guys to states. We are 10-0 in single and double A. We just won Ritchie County Duals as a team, smoking all the teams. We are practicing very intensely. Practice will just start getting tougher from here on out. As a team we have the heart and dedication to keep getting better and our goal is to take everyone to states and have a lot of placers and a few champs.”

Regionals is scheduled for February 20th at Williamstown. States is scheduled for February 25th-27th and is going to be held at Big Sandy Superstore Arena in Huntington.
