The Boys Basketball Team Welcomes New Faces

With football season recently coming to a close here at WCHS it’s time to get ready for some basketball. Although they did lose some great athletes, the team has gained many students who are new to the sport and freshmen.

Another change to the basketball team this year is the head coach. Coach Chase Mills has gone from freshman coach to head coach, filling the shoes of Coach Murray. Coach Murray led the boys’ basketball team for many years here at Wirt County High School but new energy and ideas are always good for any team. Coach Mills said, “The coaches and players are excited to get the season started. There was a lot of time and effort put into the past four weeks with practices, strength training, conditioning, and scrimmages. We are a young and inexperienced team but as the season goes along it will be exciting to watch our guys grow and develop.img_0554

The only two returning varsity players are Drew Adams and Josh Ellison. We will expect a lot from them and lean on those two a lot throughout the season. TJ Conley, Troy Craft, Stephen Cunningham, Blake Batten, Trenton Burdette, and Justin Rood are upperclassmen that will look to contribute. Zakk Adams, Seth Suslik, as well as a few freshmen will also be in the mix. We open our season on Tuesday, December 13th at home vs. Ravenswood. Go Tigers!”

The players and coaches are always working hard to have a good season. When asked what the team’s expectations are for this season, sophomore Zakk Adams says, “We’re going to try to improve from last year and hope to go deeper into the post season than we did” and when asked how the team is adjusting to Coach Mills he replied, “Everybody is handling it great. Sometimes it’s kinda tough for some people to remember all the plays because compared to last year we have more offensive plays and switch our defenses more often. Other than that Coach Mills is doing great and I think the team will do just fine when the regular season gets here.”

This years’ varsity team consists of 12 players, and the junior varsity team is made up of 11 players. All of these athletes are working hard towards an honorable season with many fun and constructive experiences. There are 5 seniors on the team this year. The seniors Drew Adams, Stephen Cunningham, TJ Conley, Josh Ellison, Tory Craft, are all working hard to leave their mark here on WCHS basketball.

The Tigers lost their first game to Ravenswood 86-32 in the season opener December 13th. Their next game is December 20th at Parkersburg Catholic.
